Young, Gifted and Black - Swim Programs Empower Youth In and Out of Water

James Rogers, who runs the Awesome Girls Mentoring program in New Orleans, said his center was spared during Hurricane Katrina, which set off flooding of the city, with some residents drowning.The year-round program is for at-risk girls, many of whom live in the inner city. The program includes girls age 11-19 years old, a majority of whom are black. Rogers said half the girls who enter the program cannot swim, but they all learn by the end of the summer.
