Macon Man Returns Home to Great Job after High-End Education in Auto Industry

Leon Tarver is BMW of Macon’s newest master service technician. He’ll earn at least $55,000 a year and could one day advance into auto design or become a field service technician, traveling the country to help stumped mechanics. During his senior year, he landed a full $21,000 scholarship to Nashville Auto-Diesel College. Please do not discourage greatness or limit it because I was not (or my peers) were not born before 1960! Ambassador Andrew Young was quoted yesterday saying that Barack Obama should not be president in 2008 because he is too young. See Errin Haine's story here.

According to McClatchy's Washington Bureau, Somalia has become Africa's worst humanitarian catastrophe. Some 200,000 refugees, mostly women and children, have fled from a pro-government offensive to makeshift camps along a 10-mile stretch of sun-baked asphalt that leads from the seaside capital of Mogadishu toward the inland town of Afgoye. The crisis is brutal on young people. In September 2007, U.N. aid workers gave video cameras to 30 Somali children who had been uprooted by fighting in Mogadishu and asked them to capture their daily life in settlements for displaced people. James Rogers, who runs the Awesome Girls Mentoring program in New Orleans, said his center was spared during Hurricane Katrina, which set off flooding of the city, with some residents drowning.The year-round program is for at-risk girls, many of whom live in the inner city. The program includes girls age 11-19 years old, a majority of whom are black. Rogers said half the girls who enter the program cannot swim, but they all learn by the end of the summer.
